Hussey condemns Oglaigh Na hEireann mortar claims

Ulster Unionist Policing Board member, Ross Hussey MLA has condemned the actions of dissident republicans which has led to homes being evacuated in West Belfast as the PSNI search for a potential unexploded mortar bomb in the Glen Road area.

Ross said:

“Since the totally reckless behaviour by dissident republicans when they targeted PSNI officers on Wednesday morning, we have seen a great disruption caused to the lives of people on the Glen Road.   The lives of the local community have been put at risk if, as claimed by Oglaigh na hEireann, an unexploded mortar is still be in the area.’

“It is totally unacceptable that daily life in this part of the city has been disrupted, with businesses being forced to close and residents who have been evacuated unsure of when they will be unable to return to their homes.  We also have already stretched PSNI resources being led on a wild goose chase in the hunt for a potentially deadly device.’

“I cannot imagine that anyway will be swayed to give their support to dissident republicans after they look at the situation they have created today. ‘

“As my Party’s representative on the Policing Board I will be working to ensure that the PSNI have all the necessary support they require to effectively deal with the threat posed by terrorist groupings such as Oglaigh na hEireann.’
