Copeland welcomes “Boris Bikes” to Belfast

East Belfast Ulster Unionist MLA Michael Copeland has given a warm welcome to the news that the Department for Regional Development is to provide funding for Belfast City Council to provide a public bike hire scheme to promote active travel.

Mr Copeland said:

‘I warmly welcome this scheme whereby the Department for Regional Development and Belfast City Council are to provide a public bike hire scheme available to both locals and visitors to the City.

Such schemes are a popular feature of over 100 cities throughout Europe and in London they have been nicknamed “Boris bikes” after the Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

The scheme will cost £700,000 and provide for 300 bikes in 30 stands across Belfast and I am confident that the development of a public bike hire scheme can only assist in Belfast’s continuing transition to a modern European city, and that tourists and locals alike will benefit from it.”
