Nesbitt hails McIlroy success in US PGA

Ulster Unionist Leader Mike Nesbitt has hailed Rory McIlroy’s fantastic achievement in winning the US PGA at the Kiawah Island Course in South Carolina.

 Mr Nesbitt said:

“I would like to congratulate Rory McIlroy on his stunning victory in the US PGA at Kiawah Island.

"He is now the first Northern Ireland golfer to win two majors and who knows where it will end, because he has shown again this weekend he has the same ability as Tiger Woods at his peak, to blow away the best of the rest.

"Special mention should also be made of Rory's coach, Michael Bannon, who gave up his position as Head Professional at Bangor Golf Club, to be Rory's fulltime advisor. It is another fantastic endorsement of local talent that Rory has stuck with the man who coached him as an amateur at Holywood.

“Graeme McDowell also deserves praise, having been in contention for the last three Majors.

“With the success of Northern Ireland Athletes at the Olympics this has been a truly wonderful fortnight for local sport and the challenge is now for DCAL and DETI to build on the tremendous momentum and goodwill generated.“
