Nesbitt calls for an Assembly term of delivery

Ulster Unionist Leader Mike Nesbitt has called for the new Assembly term to begin with an update from Ministers on the agreements across a range of areas as outlined by the First and deputy First Minister in July.

The Strangford MLA, who is also Chair of the OFMdFM Committee said:

'On the 18th July the First and deputy First Minister announced that they had reached agreement on ten policy areas and initiatives which were to be taken forward over the course of the next number of weeks. Given that we are now into September and a new Assembly term is beginning, I believe that we should have a number of Ministerial statements on each of these issues.'

'Whilst it is clear that some progress has been made, for example the appointment of the single Victims Commissioner, it is vital that the Assembly has the opportunity to scrutinise the progress being made in other important areas such as the review of government structures and the Education Skills Authority Bill.'

'I noted the Scottish Parliament began with their First Minister settiing out the Programme for Government for the 2012-13 session including 15 new Bills. Our First and deputy First Ministers are notable by their absence in any of business which will come before the house this week.'

'I want this Assembly term to be characterised by its ability to deliver. That means debating the big issues arising from Executive business. A series of Ministerial statements would certainly be a good starting point for that.'
