Nesbitt welcomes Orange Order decision over Covenant Centenary Parade

Ulster Unionist Party Leader, Mike Nesbitt, has welcomed the decision of the Orange Order and associated bands to play only hymns while passing St Patrick's Church during the Covenant Centenary celebrations on the 29th of September.

The Strangford MLA said: "This is the latest gesture of goodwill from the loyal orders and bands, and once again, it creates the space for everyone to hope for better in the future. I attended last night's meeting in north Belfast where the decision was taken, and having listened carefully to the debate, am convinced that the gesture is intended in the spirit of generosity I think is essential to transform the current mood.’

"If welcomed by St Patrick's, it seems to me it makes the Parades Commission's life easy, as beyond those who will never be satisfied, it removes any area of contention, and therefore any reason for the Commission to place further restrictions on the day.

"It was also clear those who made the decision were acutely aware of the associated risks in making such a gesture, which is a one-off and they await the response with interest.

"Given the loyal orders gave the Decade of Centenaries a peaceful, respectful and fitting start with the Balmoral Review, this announcement is a consistent and welcome development."
