Ulster Unionists congratulate Lord Empey on appointment to British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly

Ulster Unionist Party Chairman, Lord Empey of Shandon, has been appointed to the prestigious British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly (BIPA), in a move that reflects Westminster’s recognition of his track record in promoting good relations between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

Ulster Unionist Party Leader Mike Nesbitt said:

“Having spent much of my Party Conference speech preaching the need for Common Sense Government, this is an early indication of a common sense appointment. Lord Empey has a finely tuned ear when it comes to the changing nature of the Union and its relationship with its closest neighbour. It was this Party, after all, that lead the legal challenge to the Republic’s constitutional claim to Northern Ireland, something that paved the way for the better relations we enjoy today.

“Lord Empey is also perfectly placed to promote the potential for our private sector in further exploring trade opportunities with the Republic.

“One of my goals as Ulster Unionist Leader is to ensure my Party takes a lead in the debate about what the Union means in the 21stCentury, and how it engages with others. Lord Empey’s appointment to the BIPA is most welcome in this context. “

Lord Empey said:

“I am very much looking forward to taking up my place on the BIPA. It is a very important forum for promoting understanding and good relations between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland and I shall endeavour to work within it for the benefit of all the citizens of Northern Ireland.”
