Ulster Unionist MLA Michael Copeland has commented following a meeting of the Assembly’s Social Development committee which received information detailing individual customers’ experiences of the Work Capability Assessment.
The East Belfast MLA, who is his Party’s spokesperson on Social Development issues, said:
“There is nothing in this that surprises me in the slightest. I have for a very long time been highlighting the failures in this system which have been brought to my attention by many constituents and reinforced by my own personal experiences representing people at the appeal stages.
The responses described the process as impersonal and prejudged. It revealed concerns that medical evidence was ignored and highlighted its inability to cater for mental health issues. It reinforces the public’s opinion that ATOS have targets that are designed to remove people from benefits regardless of their physical or mental condition.
I fully recognise the need for reform of the welfare system. However, the experience of the personal Work Capability Assessment process so far has been one of difficulty, frustration and deep concern to those involved.”
