Extension of Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry parameters will ensure all victims will be heard – Nesbitt

Ulster Unionist Party leader, Mike Nesbitt MLA has said that the decision made by the OFMdFM Committee to extend the parameters of the Inquiry into Historical Institutional Abuse to 1922 will ensure that all victims are able to take part in the process.

Mike, who is also Chair of the OFMdFM Committee said:

“The parameters of the Inquiry in Historical Institutional Abuse has been extended to include cases since 1922 because the OFMdFM Committee felt very strongly that it was vital that all victims were able to take part in this process and have their stories heard.’

“As Chair of the Committee, I am committed to ensuring that the correct conditions are created for victims and I think that this amendment is certainly a positive step for the process.’

“Too many have suffered the trauma of abuse at the hands of those who were in a position of trust.  This is why it is vital that we get this right, the victims have been let down too many times in the past; firstly by their abusers and then by those who helped to cover up the abuse. This inquiry addresses those failings.’
