Ulster Unionists hit out at shameful Sinn Fein attempt to block activities of Armed Forces Advocate in Derry City Council

Ulster Unionist MLA Ross Hussey has slammed as “shameful” the attempt by Sinn Fein councillors to frustrate the activities of an Armed Forces Advocate appointed by Derry City Council.

Mr Hussey said:

“Last night in Derry City Council, Sinn Fein sought to ensure that although an Armed Forces Advocate has been appointed by the Council, he will be unable to take up his duties.

Sinn Fein’s excuse that there are legal implications regarding preferential treatment is utter hypocrisy which exposes the hollowness of their commitment to “an Ireland of equals” and looks more like a return to failed mind-set and dogma of “Brits Out.”

This is a shameful act, particularly in the week when the Royal British Legion launches its annual Poppy Appeal.

The facts are as follows. Six weeks ago the Veterans Advisory and Pensions Committee which supports about 900,000 serving and former members of the armed forces met Derry City Council to ask it to appoint an Armed Forces advocate.

In spite of Sinn Fein efforts at the time, the City Council voted to appoint an Armed Forces Advocate in recognition of the fact that the Armed Forces recruit right across the community within Northern Ireland, from throughout the island of Ireland and the many citizens of Londonderry who have served in the Armed Forces and would therefore benefit from a body such as the Veterans Advisory and Pensions Committee and a City Council appointed Armed Forces advocate.”

Ronnie McKeegan, Vice Chair of Foyle Ulster Unionists, said:

“Why should the substantial number of former servicemen and women in Londonderry be denied the equality of representation available to their former comrades elsewhere?

Sinn Fein Councillors in Derry City Council have to  realise that they need to pay more than lip service to the notion of a shared future and start demonstrating they are capable of tolerating those of different opinions and traditions to their own.”
