How can we take Sinn Fein seriously over reconciliation while they refuse to condemn those responsible for terrorist attacks? - Elliott

The Ulster Unionist Party has successfully amended a motion calling for the Assembly to support Cllr Sammy Brush.  The amendment extended that support to all political representatives who have been victims of terrorism.

Justice spokesperson, Tom Elliott MLA said:

"The Ulster Unionist Party amendment to today’s Assembly motion in support of Cllr Sammy Brush allows us to show all elected representatives who have been targeted by terrorists that they have our support.

The fact that a motion calling for the release of Gerry McGeough should be brought forward to a council of which the man he tried to murder is an elected member is totally and utterly shameful.  I am astounded at the crass insensitivity and lack of judgement shown by the SDLP and Sinn Fein in both bringing forward this motion and lending support to such a call.

How can we take Sinn Fein’s talk of reconciliation seriously when they continue to show support for those responsible for harrowing terrorist attacks?  If they were at all committed to truly reconciling divisions in Northern Ireland they would completely condemn the acts of people like Gerry McGeough."
