Ulster Unionists call for action to support the construction industry

Ulster Unionists Robin Swann and Sandra Overend have called for specific action to support the construction industry following the announcement that Patton’s construction company in Ballymena is facing serious financial difficulties.

Robin Swann, Ulster Unionist MLA for North Antrim, said:

“From a local point of view this is devastating news coming as it does in the company’s centenary year. Patton’s has a great reputation both locally and internationally and employs over 300 staff. Like many in the construction sector, they have suffered as a result of the economic downturn and began the year with announcements of a substantial pre-tax loss as well as 50 job cuts.

It is clear that progressing capital projects would help the construction sector immensely and the failure to begin the building of social housing at St Patricks Barracks is just one example of further delay.  If we are serious about aiding this sector then we need immediate action.”

Sandra Overend MLA, Ulster Unionist Economy spokesperson, said:

“I would reiterate the Ulster Unionist Party’s call for government to increase expenditure on capital projects in order to give the economy the boost it so desperately needs. This change in course would also specifically help the construction sector which has been in decline for such a prolonged period of time. The news that Patton’s are now facing serious financial difficulties so soon after FG Wilson shedding nearly 800 jobs show that change is needed and action is required.

The latest Northern Ireland Construction Bulletin outlines the scale of the challenge and it is clear that this industry has yet to even begin a recovery. The Ulster Unionist Party believes that specific action is needed to prevent further decline and boost the economy. Capital investment must be forthcoming.”
