Ulster Unionists Condemn Londonderry Bombing

The Chairman of the Ulster Unionist Party’s Foyle Association, Terry Wright, has condemned last night’s bombing of the 2012 UK City of Culture offices in the City.

Mr Wright said;

“The Ulster Unionist Party adds its condemnation of those who saw fit to place a bomb in the centre of Londonderry yesterday evening.
Thankfully there are no reported injuries.

Whoever has seen fit to adopt this strategy has no mandate from the community and are acting from a misguided and delusional belief that it serves some purpose.

At a time when this city is struggling to advance and its people are experiencing obvious difficulties, we can no longer indulge their folly. We believe that firm and decisive action needs to be taken by Government using the means at its disposal to bring it to an end and ensure this small number of individuals are not allowed to create misery for the overwhelming majority of the people in this city.

Mr Wright’s comments were endorsed by West Tyrone UUP MLA and Policing Board member Ross Hussey.

Mr Hussey said;

'What have Dissident Republicans to offer the people of Londonderry or anywhere in Northern Ireland or Ireland?  Here we have a clear blatant message to the people of Londonderry we do not want the jobs, the potential investment, and the kudos the UK City of Culture celebration will bring to the city.  There is no other message that such actions can send.  Nobody wants to see this province brought back to the days when bombs and bomb scares were a daily occurrence.

I unreservedly condemn those responsible for their cowardly actions and hope that the citizens of Londonderry are no longer subjected to the reign of terror that such actions bring.  I would also ask the Judiciary to bear in mind the fear and absolute terror these actions cause when these thugs are eventually brought before them in relation to this and many similar incidents over the past months.”
