Attack on Kingsmills Memorial Amounts to Intimidation of Unionist Community – Kennedy

Following Friday`s attack on the Kingsmills Memorial just outside Whitecross, Newry & Armagh Ulster Unionist MLA, Danny Kennedy has expressed his disgust at what he described as "this act of intimidation" and called on Republican representatives to step up to the mark and condemn the incident without equivocation.

Danny Kennedy said, "I am absolutely appalled by the attack on the Kingsmills Memorial. The republican cowards responsible for this desecration have once again shown the sectarianism that still spews from some sections of the community. Not content with the Provisional IRA having robbed the Kingsmills families of their loved ones in an act of sectarian savagery, Irish Republicans have attempted to heap further pain on them by attempting to intimidate the workers erecting the memorial and then returning later to deface it.

These attacks make clear that there would be no room for IRA Victims in Irish Republicans` vision for a United Ireland and is a deliberate attempt to intimidate the Unionist Community of South Armagh. Sinn Fein and their supporters need to step up to the mark and provide information to the Police not only about the attacks on the memorial, but also about the murder of the Ten Innocent Protestant Workmen in 1976 carried out by the Provisional IRA. This would do more for reconciliation than any hollow words from their spokespeople."
