Ulster Unionist Party Position on Street Protests

The Ulster Unionist Party affirms the democratic right to lawful, peaceful protest.

Following the violence that accompanied a number of street protests, we called on people to leave the streets, as we were fearful an attempted murder of a police officer could escalate to an actual killing. This call was largely ignored, not least because the protesters tell us they feel no connection with our local politicians.

We must make a pragmatic response to this, as further demonstrations are planned.

Our representatives will decide whether to attend future, peaceful protests. The one test is whether they feel their presence will add to, or dampen tension, and facilitate others, including traders and shoppers, to get on with their own daily lives. Our representatives are encouraged to consult, not least with the PSNI, before making their decisions.
