Ulster Unionist Party constituency offices now provide a “Safe Place” for victims of domestic violence. Deputy Whip and Mid-Ulster MLA, Sandra Overend, recently co-ordinated training for constituency staff from across Northern Ireland, in conjunction with Women’s Aid.

Sandra said,

“The domestic violence statistics for Northern Ireland make for deeply disturbing reading. Locally there is an incident reported every 21 minutes. On average the victims will experience 35 incidents of abuse before they make a call for help. I believe that it is vital that victims are able to easily locate a network of help and support.’

“The Safe Place Initiative provided training for our constituency office staff, which was centred around understanding the causes and effects of domestic abuse and how they can provide help and support if a victim contacts them.’

“Domestic Abuse hurts the most vulnerable in our society, which is why the Ulster Unionist Party is totally committed to helping those affected. Shockingly the cases of domestic violence against men and women continue to grow. It is important that victims know that there is help for them out there and they do not have to suffer alone.’

“Many of our Ulster Unionist Party offices are now offering a place where anyone who is suffering domestic abuse can come in confidence and get information on how they can seek help. As always the Domestic Violence Helpline operates 24 hours a day on 0800 917 1414.’
