Current mechanisms for dealing with the past operate in an imperfect and imbalanced manner which only serve to rewrite history – Hussey

Ulster Unionist MLA, Ross Hussey has expressed concern at the methods currently employed to investigate the past following a statement by the Police Ombudsman, Michael Maguire, which confirmed that his Office will resume its investigations of historical matters.

The Policing Board member stated;

“Following the publication of a number of negative reports about the Police Ombudsman's Office it was clear that change was necessary. It is therefore pleasing to some extent that the Criminal Justice Inspectorate and Police Ombudsman himself feel that processes and procedures have been improved sufficiently to resume the job they had previously undertaken.'

“However, the Ulster Unionist Party remain concerned that the current mechanisms for dealing with the past operate in an imperfect and imbalanced manner which only serve to rewrite history. This issue must be addressed in a holistic way which includes looking at the role of the Ombudsman's Office as being the correct vehicle for the investigation of the 150 cases currently within their jurisdiction.”
