Copeland in call for flood protection system scheme for those affected by flooding in East Belfast

RELEASE IMMEDIATE

Ulster Unionist MLA, Michael Copeland has called on the DARD Minister to provide grants for flood protection systems to those homes in east Belfast that are worst affected by flooding.

The East Belfast representative said:

Heavy rainfall continues to have a devastating effect on many homes and businesses in East Belfast.  I have visited many properties that have been destroyed by flooding and it is simply unacceptable to expect the occupants to pick up the pieces each time we have a turn of bad weather, especially when there are effective protection systems which can be put in place.’

I have written to Minister Michelle O’Neill, asking her to introduce a grants scheme for those homes which are continually flooded, which would be paid directly to companies which install flood protection systems.  The Minister has responded informing me that she has asked for a scoping report on this issue and will keep me informed of developments.  This progress will undoubtedly be welcomed by those residents in East Belfast who have been worst hit by flooding.'

I will continue to lobby to ensure that those who are affected by flooding are given all the support they need in protecting their homes.’
