Time for border poll charade to stop – Elliott

Ulster Unionist Justice Spokesperson, Tom Elliott MLA has called for the border poll charade being played out by Sinn Fein to come to an end.

"The results of the BBC Spotlight poll on a United Ireland show once again that there is absolutely no evidence to support the calls for a Border Poll. 79% of people say that they would vote to remain part of the United Kingdom if a vote was held tomorrow. The charade being performed by Sinn Fein, and engaged in by others should be brought to an end.'

"Sinn Fein are not concerned by the fact that they would be heavily defeated at a Border Poll, rather they are focussed on getting the meter started on running a Border Poll every seven years. This would mean that Northern Ireland would be ‘permanently in border poll mode’. It would provide them with a vehicle to further destabilise community relations within Northern Ireland, just as they have already done with their debacle at Belfast City Hall. '

"As my colleague, Lord Empey has said, “If this process were set in train, it would give Sinn Fein a permanent opportunity to grandstand and put the constitutional issue front and centre forever.’

“The BBC Spotlight Poll is further evidence that the Union is safe and that its benefits are recognised by Protestants and Catholics alike. This is as it should be because the Union is for everyone.’

"Northern Ireland`s constitutional position is settled. Let`s leave it at that and refrain from un-necessary diversions such as border polls which are only designed to massage Sinn Fein`s large political ego."
