Swann welcomes Queen’s boost for jobs and Medical Research

The new Chair of the DEL Committee, Robin Swann MLA has given a warm welcome to the announcement by Queen’s University that 400 new construction jobs are to be created through its new Centre for Experimental Medicine building project which will itself provide 110 jobs when operational.

Mr Swann, who is the Ulster Unionist Party’s North Antrim representative, said:

“This is very welcome news for both the hard-pressed construction sector and for research & development.

Work will commence this very week on the £32million Centre for Experimental Medicine (CEM) and provide 400 jobs as a result.

Once complete in 2015 then Centre will create 110 new jobs for scientists and allied health professionals. These are exactly the type of high skilled high quality research & development jobs which the local economy needs and will ensure that Queen’s maintains its place at the forefront of modern research.

As Chair of the DEL Committee I look forward to working to ensure that our Universities, FE Colleges and schools provide our young people with the skills which employers are looking for in the workplaces of the 21st Century and I am proud to see the Queen’s University of Belfast leading the way.”
