Copeland welcomes progress on flood protection plans

East Belfast MLA, Michael Copeland has welcomed an assurance from the Agriculture Minister that a flood protection scheme that he proposed is now being considered as an option by the Rivers Agency.

The Ulster Unionist said:

“Following continual flooding in many residential areas of East Belfast, which saw many homes damaged as a result, I wrote to the Agriculture Minister proposing a flood protection system scheme to help those who have their homes continually flooded.  The scheme would see payment made directly to companies who install flood protection systems, providing some relief to those who have had their homes damaged in the past by flooding.’

“I received assurances from the Minister that she had discussed my idea with the Rivers Agency, who are now looking at it as an option.  This is a positive step in the right direction for those people who are helpless in the face of the devastating effects of extreme weather.  I will continue to lobby to ensure that those who have been worst affected by flooding are given all the support they need to protect their homes.’
