Copeland hits out at further delay in Welfare Bill

Ulster Unionist MLA Michael Copeland has hit out following a further delay to the Welfare Bill at the behest of the Department of Social Development.

The East Belfast MLA, who is his Party’s Social Development spokesperson, said:

“This further delay represents evidence of a piece of legislation in deep trouble and a Department and Minister in turmoil.

We have been repeatedly warned by Minister McCausland that delays in the progress of his bill will occasion great expense, and yet it seems that the greatest delays are coming at his behest. The uncertainty surrounding this legislation is adding to the atmosphere of fear among low paid working families with children, the sick, the disabled and all those who may be affected by these proposals

I and others have concerns that this delay may be evidence of shady behind the scenes deals between the DUP and Sinn Fein in the corridors and rooms of Stormont Castle, in an attempt to thwart the authority of the Assembly.”
