Statement from the Working Group on Parades under the Unionist Forum

The Unionist Forum Parades working Group has now held a number of meetings, including a scheduled meeting today in Parliament Buildings.

The group have issued the following statement after their latest meeting this afternoon.

The group which includes representatives of various political and voluntary groups have been tasked with reporting to the Unionist Forum over the coming weeks.

The group were horrified at the despicable scenes witnessed over the Easter period in which Republican MLAs participated in what were extremely controversial parades and events, when guns were brought onto the streets and children were dressed in paramilitary uniforms.

The group will ensure it engages widely with the Unionist community, reports appropriately and looks forward to widespread agreement in finding a replacement for the parades commission.  This work has not been helped by the disgraceful scenes last night.

The Easter events have been expounded by the grotesque and offensive utterances and obscene acts of triumphalism in response to the death of Baroness Thatcher, witnessed on the streets on Northern Ireland last night. These obnoxious celebrations are wholly unacceptable in any reasonable society, and must be condemned by all right thinking people.
