Elliott welcomes “victory for common sense” with news that Classic and Historic cars are to be exempt from MOT in Northern Ireland

Tom Elliott, the Ulster Unionist MLA for Fermanagh & South Tyrone, has welcomed the decision by the Environment Minister Alex Attwood MLA to exempt all pre - 1960 historic vehicles from the MOT test, with legislation due to come into effect in September 2013.

Tom said: “I have been in contact with many members representing vintage vehicles groups for a number of years and pressing for this ruling. This is a victory for common sense and reduces unnecessary tests and bureaucracy.

“From my experience accidents involving historic/vintage vehicles are extremely rare and the majority of owners are meticulous in keeping their vehicles in pristine condition. It was in my opinion an unnecessary test for a vehicle which may have only travelled a few hundred miles in a year and added an additional cost to enthusiasts. This has been a long process compounded by EU regulations and has taken a considerable time to reach this stage.

“I am acutely aware of the many different vintage clubs throughout Northern Ireland that raise vast sums of monies for many local charities. These enthusiasts derive great enjoyment from their experiences with these vehicles and their fund-raising activities. There is also a great public awareness and expectation of these owners and groups to attend various events.

“I have lobbied the Department and successive Environment Ministers during the past number of years on this issue and am very pleased that it has now been agreed.”
