Ulster Unionists call for Local Councils to mark funeral of murdered soldier

Ulster Unionist Leader, Mike Nesbitt MLA, has called on Northern Ireland’s 26 local Councils to make arrangements to mark the funeral of murdered Royal Fusilier Lee Rigby, so that the people of the Northern Ireland can show their respect.

Mr Nesbitt said:

“The whole of the United Kingdom was shocked at the horrific murder of Lee Rigby in Woolwich on Wednesday.

"I believe people would welcome leadership from our local Councils on this matter and suggest two actions. Firstly, it would be entirely appropriate if our local Councils were to make space available for people to gather at the time of the funeral, to send a message of sympathy to the Rigby family, support for our armed forces, and our solidarity in opposing terrorism.

"Secondly, Councils could open books of condolence, which would be a tangible proof of the support for the family, friends and colleagues of a young man who was so brutally murdered in cold blood.

"It is important at times like this that all the people of the United Kingdom come together to demonstrate that we truly are united across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland."
