Sandra Overend disappointed with GAA`s ‘empty words’

Ulster Unionist Party Assembly Member for Mid-Ulster, Sandra Overend, has hit out at Ulster GAA claims over IRA terrorist medals.

Mrs Overend said,

“I am bitterly disappointed and shocked at the claims made by the Ulster GAA that they received “no approach…at any level” regarding an incident in which Galbally Pearses GAA club in Tyrone presented medals featuring an IRA terrorist to children as young as 11. I wrote to Ulster GAA on 3 separate occasions regarding this and another issue, and have, as yet, received no acknowledgment from them, let alone a response to address the issues raised, even despite follow up phone calls from my staff.

“The GAA claims to be attempting to reach out across the community, however, when I raised concerns about the acts of one GAA club it seemingly doesn’t warrant a response. The issues raised were of concern not only to unionists, but also many nationalists. If the GAA are genuine in their attempt to prove that they are just a sporting organisation they need to address these concerns. The fact that they ignored my letters, my concerns and those of my constituents has left me less than convinced that their expressions of being a cross community organisation are genuine.”
