Jim Nicholson MEP has been working in Brussels to help spread the word about the 2013 World Police and Fire Games to take place in Northern Ireland from 1st-10th August. Attending a special reception hosted by the Northern Ireland Executive Office Mr Nicholson met a large group of Belgium competitors who will be representing the Police, Prison and Fire Services of Belgium in the summer Games.
“It is quite a coup for Northern Ireland to have won the right to host the World Police and Fire Games and terrific opportunity to showcase the very best of the province. To date there are athlete registrations from 22 of the 27 member states in the European Union with Spain sending a team of over 300 athletes. We are working hard now to raise awareness of the Games amongst all my political colleagues in the European Parliament to encourage as many athletes as possible to make the trip, participate in the huge variety of sports on offer and enjoy our fabulous leisure and tourism facilities.”
The World Police and Fire Games is a biennial event for serving and retired police, prison, fire and customs officers and this will be the first time that it will be held in the UK and only the third time in Europe. Thousands of competitors and their friends and families from up to 70 countries are expected to attend what is billed as the third largest sporting event in the world.
