Revealing the content of tapes not exclusive to the Irish banking crisis – Elliott

Following the 41st Anniversary of Bloody Friday, one of the worst days of republican violence during the troubles, Ulster Unionist Justice Spokesperson Tom Elliott has called on Gerry Adams to tell the truth about the contents of the Boston College tapes. Gerry Adams and Sinn Fein have quite rightly called for the contents of Anglo-Irish Bank tapes to be revealed but the same must be true of the Boston College tapes.

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said;

‘While Sinn Fein demands the release of the Anglo-Irish Bank tapes, and confirmation of their contents, it is hypocritical that Sinn Fein have refused to give similar support to the disclosure of information contained in the Boston College tapes. Many atrocities were carried out by republicans over many years in the name of Irish Freedom and in many cases no one was ever brought to justice. Conversely, we have the multi-million pound Bloody Sunday inquiry and the continued calls for a Ballymurphy inquiry and a Pat Finucane inquiry.’

‘While these demands continue, Sinn Fein must play their part in alleviating the pain and hurt inflicted on the victims of the troubles. They could start that process by fully acknowledging the contents of the Boston tapes and the role of their President, Gerry Adams, within the IRA.  If Gerry Adams continues to portray himself as having no knowledge of what went on inside the IRA Army council, many people will look upon their comments about the Anglo-Irish tapes as grossly hypocritical.’
