Ulster Unionist Craigavon Deputy Mayor walks 26 Miles for children with cancer

The Deputy Mayor of Craigavon Borough Council, Councillor Colin McCusker is to take part in one of the most scenic marathons in the world, the Causeway Coast challenge walk on 28 September, to raise funds for children and young people with cancer.

Along with his wife, Anne-Louise, the Deputy Mayor will walk 26 miles, following paths, tracks and the coastline of the Causeway Coast Way. The route passes through stunning coastline scenery with exquisite views of wide bays, sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and offshore rocks. The event is organised by 26 Extreme who will offer a high level of support and feed stations around the course.

The Deputy Mayor of Craigavon Borough Council, Cllr Colin McCusker said:

“My wife has taken part in one of the other 26 extreme challenges, the Mourne Way marathon, and she has been asking me to take part in a similar event for a couple of years.  When I was made aware of the ‘Homes from Home’ appeal, I decided to help raise money for this charity as part of my year as Deputy Mayor, as well as taking up the challenge laid down by my wife.  This is a very worthwhile local Appeal which will provide much needed accommodation for families in Northern Ireland.  With just 9 weeks left my training for the event is underway and we have our little helpers to motivate us and push us on!”

When a child or young person in Northern Ireland is diagnosed with cancer, families can travel an average of up to 500 miles a week to access the treatment they need. They already face a huge emotional and financial strain with a cancer diagnosis without the added stress of travel. CLIC Sargent in Northern Ireland aims to ease that burden by building free, self-catering accommodation close to the two main Belfast hospitals, for families when their child is getting treatment for cancer.

Fundraising Manager Gemma McCallan said:

“The Deputy Mayor and his wife, Anne-Louise, are certainly taking on a challenge for CLIC Sargent and we are very grateful for their support. Their fundraising efforts will go towards the Homes from Home Appeal which will be a fantastic resource for families in Northern Ireland. We wish them both the best of luck and look forward to hearing all about it when they return!”
