Kennedy welcomes reopening of Inquest into murder of Kingsmills Massacre victim

Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kennedy has welcomed the Attorney General’s request that the Senior Coroner reopen the inquest into the murder of John McConville, one of the victims of the Kingsmills Massacre.

Mr Kennedy said:

“I very much welcome the decision of the Attorney General, John Larkin QC, to request that the Senior Northern Ireland Coroner, John Leckey, reopen the inquest into the murder of John McConville, who was murdered on 5th January 1976 along with his 9 work colleagues in the Kingsmills Massacre.

This is a welcome development in pursuit of obtaining maximum justice for the relatives of Kingsmills. However, given the current workload indicated by the Senior Coroner, it is vital that this inquest should be brought forward to the earliest possible date, and with this in mind I will be requesting a meeting with the Justice Minister asking that the necessary resources are provided to the Coroner to enable this case to be taken as soon as possible.

I would also pay tribute to all those individuals and groups, especially the family members of the murdered men, who have campaigned for, and who continue to work to seek proper and meaningful justice for the Kingsmills families.”
