Nicholson welcomes new ‘green’ bus and train station in Antrim

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has welcomed the opening of Northern Ireland’s first low-carbon bus and train station in Antrim.

Speaking today Mr Nicholson said, “It is great to see that EU money has been used to create something that will be beneficial to commuters, wildlife and the environment.

“As a substitute member of the Committee for Environment in the European Parliament, I am pleased to see that this bus and train station is built with special bricks which are designed to allow swifts to build nests within them; and that the roof is covered in lichen – making it friendly to bees whilst at the same time cleaning rainwater to be collected to be used in toilet flushing.

“In addition to this, the building is heated naturally from heat below the surface of the earth via pipes that run 100m deep. This station is a great addition to Antrim town, it is useful, environmentally friendly, and also a visitor attraction.”
