Swann congratulates Southern Regional College on establishing greater links with Europe through STEMS project

Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist MLA and Chair of the Department of Employment and Learning Committee, was delighted to address an event held in Stormont on Friday to recognise the work of Southern Regional College in facilitating the STEMS project (Supporting the Transfer of Education and Mobility Strategies)

Mr Swann said:

“It was a privilege to address the STEMS event in Stormont. I believe it is vitally important that we formally recognise the work carried out by those in places such as Southern Regional College - work that goes on behind the scenes, but is crucial to improving our society.

“It is a credit to Southern Regional College that it has set up a dedicated International Department, responsible for implementing and organising European and International mobility which has helped create greater links with Europe.

“The objectives of the STEMS project, established in September 2011, were to produce a handbook for the management of EU mobility work placements and to develop an accredited Good Relations Programme and to help challenge prejudice and discrimination in sport.

“Southern Regional College have worked with partners in Ireland, Scotland, Italy and Spain and in the course of developing the handbook, the project has helped expand the knowledge of students undertaking the course and helped them think seriously about good relations. Maybe some of the things these young people have learnt can help in the development of the Executive`s good relations strategy.

“I commend everyone for their initiative and hard work.”
