Ulster Unionist Councillor, John Scott, has condemned plans to commemorate Shankill bomber Thomas Begley. Mr Scott`s niece, Wilma McKee, was one of nine innocent victims who were murdered by Begley in the 1993 attack on Frizzell`s fish shop.
Mr Scott said:
“Wilma was my niece, but she was more like a sister to me. Wilma was one of nine innocent people murdered by Thomas Begley. He wasn`t a hero and he wasn`t a victim. He made a choice. His death was his own doing, but unfortunately he murdered nine innocents in the process, including Wilma.
“For republicans to commemorate Begley as a hero is sickening and will only bring further trauma for victims and their families. They obviously have no thoughts for Wilma, the eight other people Begley murdered and those he injured on 23rd October 1993.
“The families of Begley`s victims have suffered enough already without republicans now rubbing their noses in Begley`s crimes by unveiling a plaque to the mass murderer. I can understand that a family may want to remember a son, but this isn`t the way to do it, given his crimes.”
