Kinahan challenges O’Dowd to bring forward next stage of the Education Bill

Danny Kinahan MLA, the Ulster Unionist Vice-Chair of the Education Committee, has challenged John O’Dowd to bring forward the next legislative stage of the Education Bill.

Mr Kinahan said:

“The Ulster Unionist Party continues to oppose the current Education Bill, which would establish a single Education and Skills Authority.  However, with sufficient amendments we believe it could lead to much more streamlined administration of education in Northern Ireland.’

“We will not support an all-powerful body which is only accountable to John O'Dowd.’

“Whilst earlier this week in the Assembly the Sinn Fein Minister stated that the Ulster Unionists have been “pulling the strings of other parties” in ensuring the current flawed proposals do not proceed, I believe the real credit should go to every school, teacher and board of governors which have spoken out publicly against the proposals.’

“I would congratulate all those who have voiced their opposition to the current ESA proposals so far; their tenacity in ensuring they are getting the best deal is admirable.’

“I would call on the Minister to now bring forward his next, much delayed, stage of the Education Bill to the Assembly so that my Party can formally propose the amendments which we believe are necessary.

“These amendments will ensure that if ESA is established it will be a fair, efficient and accountable body.’
