Kennedy announces £10.2million water mains investment in Belfast area

Ulster Unionist Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy MLA has announced a £10.2million package of work across Belfast to upgrade the water supply infrastructure.

The schemes will involve the laying of 65km of new water mains across the city, and are part of NI Water’s ongoing upgrading of the water supply infrastructure throughout Northern Ireland.

The ongoing improvement programme has seen £90million spent over the last three years laying 1000km of new water mains throughout Northern Ireland.

This new programme of work will get underway in November 2013 and will continue for a period of approximately 13 months. The work will involve laying 65km of new watermains throughout the south, north and west Belfast areas. The majority of the work in the north Belfast area will get underway in January 2014.

Danny Kennedy said “This major water mains investment for the Belfast area is great news.

“The upgraded water mains will improve the quality, reliability and security of the local water supply right across Northern Ireland.

“While reducing leakage and improving pressure in the area, it will also help protect many important jobs in the hard pressed construction sector”

Sara Venning interim Chief Executive, NI Water added: “The scale of the ongoing water mains project has required extensive work on local roads. However, where possible, we will use state of the art low-dig technology throughout this programme of work which will enable us to lay many of the mains without the need to open large trenches.

“I would like to thank householders, businesses and road users for their continued patience and support. The local communities will enjoy the benefits of this work for many years to come.”

NI Water will, in co-operation with DRD Roads Service, do everything possible to keep any disruption to a minimum. We will also work with Translink to ensure that public transport services function with minimum disruption.

NI Water and our contractor Farrans Construction will carry out letter drops in affected areas to advise residents of this work. We would like to thank the residents and road users in advance for their co-operation and patience during this essential improvement work.
