Ulster Unionist Assembly Member for South Belfast Michael McGimpsey has welcomed the encouraging response from the Minister of Education John O’Dowd during Question Time in the Assembly on the inclusion of the new consolidated primary school for inner-South Belfast in the allocation of the capital programme.
In a statement following the response Mr McGimpsey said. “The new consolidated primary school would encompass Fane Street Primary School, Blythfield Primary School on Sandy Row, and Donegall Primary School. These schools are placed in some of the most disadvantaged communities in Northern Ireland – communities for who education is of paramount importance to allow our children to progress throughout life able to grab the opportunities available to them.”
“Given that a milestone has been reached with planning permission being granted for the new primary school, the Minister’s assurance that it will be sincerely considered for the allocation under the capital programme was very encouraging.
In conclusion, Mr McGimpsey said, “With the provision of the new primary school as part of the current redevelopment of the area, we would be able to provide the support and education that the children who attend these schools and the wider community are entitled to. I await the Ministers decision on the allocation of the capital programme with eager anticipation.”
