Sandra Overend MLA, Ulster Unionist Tourism spokesperson, has responded to the latest NISRA tourism figures.
Mrs Overend said:
“While it is good news that locals have clearly been doing their bit in encouraging friends and family to visit Northern Ireland (increasing by +19%), and that more people are visiting for business (increasing by 8%); it is clear that the focus now needs to be on increasing the amount of people who are visiting Northern Ireland for a holiday who may have no link with the province (down-9%).
“Efforts now need to be focused on growing the amount of actual holiday makers coming to Northern Ireland, rather than overnight or short stay visitors. We need to see more people staying in our hotels and B&B’s, rather than staying with friends and family.’
“However it is promising to see that the spending in the most recent twelve months has already exceeded the PfG expenditure target. Our local traders will be glad to hear that those visiting our shores are keen to spend their money here.
