Ulster Unionists condemn attacks on Londonderry's Fountain Estate

The Ulster Unionist Party has condemned last night's attack on the Fountain Estate in Londonderry.

The Party's Foyle Constituency Chairman, Ronnie McKeegan, said:

"The Ulster Unionist Party totally condemns last night's petrol bomb attack on the Fountain Estate in Londonderry.

“These attacks have been on-going for a number of weeks in the run-up to Bloody Sunday Commemorations, with absolutely no provocation from Fountain residents.

“The people of the Fountain simply want to be left in peace to live their lives and such attacks do nothing to promote the idea that the minority unionist community in the Fountain are welcomed as equal citizens in the Londonderry of today, never mind a shared future of tomorrow.

“Ross Hussey and I will be seeking an urgent meeting with the PSNI with a view to having patrols stepped up in the vicinity as a matter of priority."

West Tyrone MLA Ross Hussey, who also represents the Party on the Policing Board, said:

"I will be raising this issue at the next PSNI policing board meeting. I will also be asking the Justice Minister David Ford if he has re-assessed his view that the security gates on the walls around the Fountain should be removed.

Having visited the area and spoken to local residents, I am fully aware of their concerns regarding the security cameras in the Bishop Street, Nailors Row area, and what use if any these cameras serve, as they seem to provide no deterrent whatsoever to the on-going attacks on the fountain."
