Ulster Unionists welcome £1.5million investment in A3 Northway road improvement scheme

Upper Bann Ulster Unionists Sam Gardiner MLA, Jo-Anne Dobson MLA and Councillor Ken Twyble have welcomed an announcement by DRD Minister Danny Kennedy of a £1.5 million road improvement scheme for the A3 Northway, Portadown.

Minister Danny Kennedy said:

“This is a significant investment in Portadown and involves a major road widening scheme which will result in a significant improvement to traffic progression on this critical link to and from the M1 motorway.  With over 27,000 vehicles a day using the route the improvements will benefit not only the wider Craigavon area but also the many motorists travelling from the Armagh area.

“Initial work on a new drainage, vehicle restraint system, street lighting and vegetation removal has already started and should take up to eight weeks, weather depending.”

“Work on the main project will hopefully start during the summer, subject to the completion of the necessary land and contract processes.  The work will last for approximately 14 weeks.’

Upper Bann MLA Sam Gardiner welcomed the news saying:

“This is much welcome news, an investment in road improvement at the A3 Northway as significant as £1.5million will have a hugely positive impact for Craigavon and Portadown.  Over 27,000 vehicles use this route each day and I would thank Minister Danny Kennedy for investing in this scheme which will greatly improve the conditions for these drivers.

Warmly welcoming the announcement local Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson said:

"This is fantastic news for the people and businesses of Portadown and Craigavon.

"I commend Minister Kennedy for delivering what is a massive financial commitment to the future economic development of Portadown and Craigavon both in the short and long terms.

"In a week when supporting town centres is in the focus again this announcement secures the Northway as an integral part of the local transport network."

Councillor Ken Twyble, Ulster Unionist Council Group Leader said:

“This investment in the Northway is much needed and is very welcome. I congratulate Danny Kennedy on giving this important road project the attention it deserves.”
