Hussey welcomes move by Minister Danny Kennedy to increase diversity in public appointments

Ross Hussey MLA, Ulster Unionist Regional Development spokesperson, has welcomed a move by Minister Danny Kennedy to increase the diversity in public appointments to the boards of bodies his Department is responsible for.

Mr Hussey said:

“It is very welcome news that Minister Kennedy is moving to increase the diversity in public appointments to the boards of the five bodies under his responsibility. It is important that public appointments reflect the makeup of society, given that they are relevant to all the people of Northern Ireland, so I am glad Minister Kennedy has taken a lead in moving to make this a reality.

“Public appointments will of course continue to be made on merit and in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice. However it is very welcome that the Minister has asked his officials to make public appointments more attractive and accessible, with a move away from what has become the almost automatic reappointment of members for second terms.

“This is a fine example of leadership from Danny Kennedy, who has a track record of doing what’s right for Northern Ireland.”
