Nesbitt deeply disappointed at narrowing of scope of On The Runs Inquiry

The Ulster Unionist Party has expressed deep disappointment at the news that Lady Justice Hallett will not be required to examine each individual case in detail, or consider the lawfulness of letters sent to IRA suspects.

Party Leader Mike Nesbitt said:

“It is disappointing that at such an early stage, the scope of this Inquiry has already been narrowed so significantly.

“Whilst we have full confidence in Lady Justice Hallett, restrictions should not be placed on the depth and breadth of the Inquiry.

“This can only lead to a further undermining of unionist confidence in this process.

“If Lady Justice Hallett does not look at each case individually, a key question will remain open – namely, what sort of police reviews gave rise to these letters informing individuals they were not wanted for questioning, and particularly whether they were Article 2 compliant.”
