Hussey praises Police action in foiling mortar attack in West Belfast

Ulster Unionist Policing Board member Ross Hussey MLA has condemned last night’s incident in the Creggan area of Londonderry in which a device exploded in a parked car.

Mr Hussey said;

“I unreservedly condemn those responsible for last night’s incident in the Carrickreagh Gardens area of Londonderry.

“It is absolute madness to plant an explosive device in a built up area where it could have killed or injured anyone unfortunate enough to be in the vicinity, including young children. The damage caused to the car makes it perfectly clear what the consequences would have been for any passer by.

“It is only logical to assume that it was the work of a violent republican faction which cannot accept democracy or normal policing and is afraid of the ballot box.

“Such criminal gangs can only be thwarted by the Police and the Police can only close them down with the total and unequivocal support of the local communities in which such groups seek to operate.

“I therefore appeal for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Creggan area last night, or who has any information about criminal activity from whatever quarter, to pass that information on to the Police immediately.”
