Lord Empey, Jim Nicholson MEP & Danny Kennedy MLA pay tribute to David McClarty

Ulster Unionist Party Chairman, Lord Empey, Jim Nicholson MEP & Danny Kennedy MLA have paid tribute to David McClarty.

Lord Empey said:

'It is with great sadness that I learned of David's passing.

“At all times David was a real gentleman in politics; he managed to combine sincere beliefs with a great sense of humour and was slow to make political enemies, which says a lot about him.

“The past year has been a real struggle for David and his family, and I was always touched by his great optimism and fortitude even when he knew the odds were against him. He was always willing to put his views forward in a fearless manner, but did so in a way that did not add hurt or injury to many inflamed situations.

“David is a great loss to Northern Ireland politics. I would like to pass on our deepest sympathies to David`s family and friends.”

Jim Nicholson MEP said

“I am very shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of David McClarty. David was an extremely popular man throughout Northern Irish politics and East Londonderry, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

“David was a true gentleman, and I am proud to have had him as a friend and colleague over the years. My thoughts and prayers are with Norma and the family at this terrible time.”

Danny Kennedy MLA said:

“It was with deep sadness that I learned of David’s passing. I knew David for many years and I had the absolute pleasure of working with him in the Northern Ireland Assembly since we were first elected in 1998.

“David made a hugely positive contribution to politics in Northern Ireland. He had an unquestionable commitment to his local constituents and when he was elected Deputy Speaker of the Assembly he watched over proceedings with absolute objectivity. Of course what many people will remember David for the most will be his renowned sense of humour and friendliness.

“My thoughts are prayers are with the McClarty family, most especially his wife Norma and two sons.”
