People should not be charged for getting their postal vote forms signed by GPs – Jim Nicholson

Ulster Unionist Party European candidate Jim Nicholson MEP has condemned those GP's charging £15 for signing postal vote forms for those suffering with ill-health.

Mr Nicholson said:

"The freedom to vote in elections in a democracy is a right hard won though conflict with those who would have removed that right. For some ill-health may make it difficult to participate to the point where they need a postal vote. To place a charge on those probably already on a low fixed income due to their health status is a barrier to free participation in the democratic process.

“I call upon those GP's engaged in this practice to stop charging people for the right to vote and for the Health Minister to step in and guarantee a truly free and unfettered access to the ballot box for those in ill-health.”
