Ulster Unionists condemn racist attack in Newtownabbey

Ulster Unionist Party Councillor John Scott has condemned the racist attack which took place on a house in the Rathcoole area of Newtownabbey in the early hours of Friday morning.

Councillor Scott, who is standing in the Macedon DEA which covers the Rathcoole area, said:

"This was a cowardly attack on a woman and three children under 11 and I condemn it unreservedly.

“I understand the house has been attacked before, that racist graffiti was involved in that attack and that the Police are treating this latest incident as a hate crime.

“This is a totally unacceptable situation which will disgust the vast majority of people in Rathcoole who simply wish to live in peace and harmony with all their neighbours, regardless of colour, creed or nationality.

“We are seeking to build a shared future here, so that the Northern Ireland of tomorrow is a place which is welcoming to all. We have come so far to emerge from decades of sectarian conflict and we simply cannot allow a tiny element to seek to attempt to replace that conflict with racial division or intolerance.

“I appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Linford Green area of Rathcoole around 2am this morning, or who can assist the Police in any way, to come forward immediately and help them to catch those responsible for this cowardly attack.”
