Nicholson: Increased footfall figures a confidence boost for local retailers

Ulster Unionist MEP, Jim Nicholson, has welcomed today’s announcement of an increase in high street footfall as a demonstration of local commitment to the regeneration of our high streets.

A report published today by the Northern Ireland Retail Consortium shows that the number of people visiting shops increased in April by 12.8% compared to the same time last year.

Mr Nicholson said:

“The figures released today will make for happy reading for many retailers in Northern Ireland.”

“In my role as MEP I have met with retailers across the province and I know the struggles they are facing. Businesses in Northern Ireland have been under huge pressure since the economic downturn so it is good to see increasing consumer footfall on our high streets.”

“There is still work to do but these latest figures suggest a positive step on the road to recovery.”

“The European Union can further help our micro, small and medium sized businesses by reducing unnecessary red tape. That is something I am committed to – the reduction of confusing and cumbersome EU regulations.”

“Furthermore, the Ulster Unionist Party supports a ‘town centre first’ approach in order to revitalize our high streets and the new super councils should be proactive in using their planning powers to help do this.”
