Hussey welcomes appointment of new Chief Constable

Ulster Unionist member of the Policing Board Ross Hussey has welcomed the appointment of George Hamilton as the new Chief Constable of the PSNI.

The West Tyrone MLA said;

“The appointment of George Hamilton will be widely welcomed, not least by officers throughout the PSNI with whom he has a very positive reputation.  George has extensive understanding of policing, having joined after leaving school, as well as having experience of serving in England, Scotland and Wales.

“The PSNI faces a number of challenges, not least the physical threats of danger which officers face both on and off duty. The role of Chief Constable comes with great responsibility and I have every confidence that George has the skill required to lead the organisation over these next 5 years.

“The next priority for the Policing Board will be the appointment of a new Deputy Chief Constable. This will be another very important step in bringing the PSNI’s senior management team to full strength.

“I would once again like to thank Matt Baggott and Judith Gillespie for their contribution to policing in Northern Ireland and wish them well in their retirements.”
