Swann Expresses Concern at Level of North Antrim Library Provision

Ulster Unionist MLA Robin Swann has expressed concern that the community in North Antrim is being short-changed in terms of library provision.

“Libraries NI will shortly take decisions on the further reduction of Library services but I am concerned that the existing service does not meet the existing Public Library Standards.

Under the existing guidelines a mobile library stop should be for at least 30mins and call at least every 2 weeks. If more smaller rural libraries are indeed earmarked for closure, even greater pressure will be placed upon the mobile service.
I believe that North Antrim should be entitled under the present standards to an improvement in services and I fear that any reductions in the number of Libraries by Libraries NI will inevitably lead to disadvantage for the rural community.
Again this is a clear example of inadequate rural proofing of decisions by the relevant departments and agencies and it requires the direct intervention of the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development who has responsibility to ensure that services to rural communities are protected.”
