South Antrim MLA Danny Kinahan today backed PSNI plans for the upcoming Halloween period.Traditionally the weeks surrounding Halloween and half-term breaks, are particularly busy for the PSNI and the Fire and Rescue Services – particularly with regard to the illegal sale and the misuse of fireworks.  Often these lead to increased levels of anti-social behavior and criminal damage.

UUP MLA Mr Kinahan said;
“I know of people in the community who, rather than enjoying this time of year, find themselves dreading it  because of the nuisance and disruption that it often brings.  I know that the PSNI start planning for this period months in advance and welcome their efforts – robust enforcement and greater partnership working has resulted in a 46% reduction in the number of firework related incidents since 2006 and while this is to be welcomed, there is no room for complacency.’
He continued, “in a recent update that I have received from the PSNI, they confirm that ‘ local Area Commanders are developing initiatives and plans to suit the needs of their local community. These plans include an increased number of high visibility police patrols in hotspot areas aimed at preventing crime and providing reassurance. In particular, police are appealing to parents to make sure they know where their children are.’”
I wholeheartedly welcome this initiative and appeal to all parents to remain aware of who their children are with and where they go.  I urge everyone in the community to go out, spend money – boost the local economy, enjoy themselves , but always, always, look out for each other and respect your neighbours.”
