New efforts by HMG to engage with Libya must lead to results for UK victims of terror - Empey

Lord Empey has said that new efforts by the British Government to engage with Libyan authorities over Libyan supported IRA terror must lead to results for victims.

Lord Empey said:

“I had previously raised concerns over what appeared to be a degree of inconsistency in the Government’s position on the matter of compensation for the victims of Libyan supported IRA terror.  However, it is welcome that my most recent correspondence with HMG seems to be consistent with the position set out by the Prime Minister in 2011 in pressing the Libyan authorities to engage on this very important matter.

“It is vital that the British Government impress upon the Libyan authorities the devastating effects semtex and arms supplied by the Gaddafi regime to the IRA have had on the lives of people in the United Kingdom.

“I welcome news that Sir Kim Darroch plans to visit Libya to assess how best to take this forward.  The fight for compensation for victims has been long running, so it is very important that these new efforts lead to results for the UK victims of IRA terrorism supported by the Gaddafi regime.
