McGimpsey welcomes promise of new state of the art school to replace Knockbreda and Newtownbreda High Schools

The Ulster Unionist Party’s South Belfast MLA Michael McGimpsey has welcomed today’s announcement by the Education Minister John O’Dowd that a new school is to be built to replace Newtownbreda and Knockbreda High Schools.

Mr McGimpsey said:

“I welcome the fact that a state-of-the-art school is to be built to house the pupils of Newtownbreda and Knockbreda but I am seeking clarity from the Education Minister as to the location of the new school.

“Firstly it must be in south Belfast in order to retain a secondary school in that area and I am convinced that the most appropriate site for the new state of the art school is the site of the current Newtownbreda school, which is more than capable of accommodating the new premises.

“It is clear from the vast majority of parents and pupils affected that their preferred option is that the new building should be on the current Newtownbreda site. We look forward to the current consultation.”
